Made in Hong Kong, screened in Europe

Once again, HKETO Berlin is collaborating with some of the most recognised and best curated film festivals in Central and Eastern Europe to present the wide variety of films produced by Hong Kong in the past 20 years, featuring works of both internationally renowned Hong Kong directors and up-and-coming filmmakers of the younger generation on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It started with the German premiere of director Johnnie To’s “Three” at this year’s Munich International Film Festival, with screenings on June 24 and 30. First held in 1983, the Munich International Film Festival is one of Europe's largest summer film festivals, attracting around 80 000 visitors every year. HKETO Berlin has supported the festival since 2015. This is followed by Create Hong Kong’s project Creative Visions: Hong Kong Cinema 1997-2017 in Berlin from July 14 to August 3. Young director Steve Chan kicked off the programme by introducing his critically-acclaimed debut, Weeds on Fire. Internationally renowned director Stanley Kwan will close the film series with his powerful and emotional work Hold You Tight. The ten selected films to be shown at Creative Visions depict the diversity, versatility and dynamism of Hong Kong and local film productions in the past two decades.

A new co-operation has been lined up with the Miskolc International Film Festival (CineFest) in Hungary. Its 14th edition will run from September 8 to 17 and will feature “Hong Kong Film Days” for the very first time with a couple of Hong Kong productions to be screened. And later that month, Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) will roll out the green carpet for stars and starlets as well as some 90 000 expected visitors. For the third consecutive year, ZFF will feature the “Hong Kong Window” as part of the “Window to the World” section presenting four to six Hong Kong productions. Also in its third year is the collaboration with Vienna International Film Festival (Viennale), scheduled from October 19 to November 2. The festival season will then be closed by the Five Flavours Film Festival in Warsaw, Poland, from November 15 to 22.

There are plenty of opportunities to celebrate the constant progress of one of the largest and most dynamic film entertainment industries in the world. Join us in these film festivals, and explore with us the wonderland of Hong Kong films.
