The Chief Executive, Mrs Carrie Lam, attended the Belt and Road Summit at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on September 11.

Creating and Realising Opportunities under the Belt and Road Initiative

The fourth Belt and Road Summit, jointly organised by the Government of the HKSAR and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), drew international limelight on 11-12 September, having brought together more than 5,000 political and business elites from over 60 countries and regions at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Under the theme “Creating and Realising Opportunities”, the two-day Summit invited over 80 government and business leaders from Hong Kong, Mainland China and countries and regions around the world to discuss the opportunities available in different sectors based on the latest developments under the Belt and Road Initiative.

The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau (first left), chaired the ministerial dialogue at last year’s Belt and Road Summit. “Rooted in history, the Belt and Road Initiative is focused on the future,” said the Chief Executive of HKSAR, Mrs Carrie Lam, at the opening of the Summit. “A multilateral, multi-level development, the Belt and Road was designed to be an open, inclusive and all-embracing global initiative, which extends beyond geographical and cultural borders and boundaries. And as this year's Summit theme – "Creating and Realising Opportunities" – suggests, Hong Kong is perfectly positioned to serve as the gateway to the Belt and Road and its manifold prospects and possibilities.”

The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Edward Yau, and the Hong Kong business and professional delegation visited Rail Cargo Hungaria Zrt in March 2019, emphasizing that Hong Kong is the prime platform for Hungarian enterprises in the Belt and Road Initiative. Inspired by the promise of the Belt and Road, the Government adopts a whole-government and five-pronged strategy, covering enhancing policy co-ordination, realising fully Hong Kong's unique advantages, maximising Hong Kong's position as a professional services hub, establishing partnerships and collaboration, and promoting Hong Kong's project participation. To facilitate business matching, the Government organised in 2019 business delegations to Georgia and Hungary, as well as Spain, Serbia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In March, we forged a Free Trade Agreement with Australia and, in June, signed off on an Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with the UAE.
