HKETO Berlin’s business outreach
Hong Kong’s strategies to become a world-leading innovation and technology hub presented at 15th European Economic Congress in Katowice
From 24 to 26 April 2023, Katowice was again the centre of attention as experts, politicians and business people alike gathered there to discuss the latest political trends and economic developments under the dynamic geopolitical environment worldwide during the 15th European Economic Congress, one of the leading business events in Central Europe. Ms Jenny Szeto, Director of the HKETO Berlin, used this excellent platform to display Hong Kong’s aspiration to become a premier centre for innovation and technology (I&T) in Asia and beyond. On 25 April 2023, Ms Szeto joined the panel discussion “Global trade and investment” and shared insights on how Hong Kong would support the sustainable growth of strategic sectors, including I&T. Among other things, Ms Szeto introduced to the audience Hong Kong’s latest strategies and initiatives for nurturing entrepreneurs, talents and research and development, including the promulgation of the Hong Kong I&T Development Blueprint in December last year. The Blueprint established a clear development path for Hong Kong’s I&T systemic and strategic development over the next five to ten years.

Networking event for German start-ups to explore market entry opportunities in Hong Kong
Some 30 participants from Berlin and abroad gathered at HKETO Berlin on 12 May 2023 to talk about the prospects for German start-ups to expand business activities to Hong Kong with its strong network of incubators, investors and accelerators that shape the city’s thriving start-up ecosystem. The number of start-ups in Hong Kong keeps rocketing and reached close to 4 000 as of 2022. Especially in the biotech and healthcare sectors, the number of new start-ups are on the rise. Hong Kong is also a popular destination for entrepreneurs from overseas including Germany. With its proximity to and close connection with the Greater Bay Area, Hong Kong is the ideal place for entrepreneurs seeking to tap the Chinese market while benefitting from its open and friendly business environment. This was one of the takeaways of the panel discussion joined by Ms Karena Belin (Whub), Mr Till Ammelburg (German Entrepreneurship), Mr Johannes Hack (DZ Bank AG) and Mr Gregory Rall (InvestHK), which focused on the unique advantages of launching a business in Hong Kong. The networking event was co-organised by HKETO Berlin, InvestHK and the German Industry and Commerce Ltd. in Hong Kong and supported by the German Asia-Pacific Business Association (OAV) as partner.
